Colin and Nick,
As Ian has said, AthensIM certainly can join the federation, the
question is does Microsoft support Shib 1.2 for DreamSpark. This is
something which I can raise with our contact at Microsoft.
Colin asked "what about all the students in sites that have not yet
implemented an IdP?". For universities and colleges that haven't
implemented Shib IdPs you can carry on using OpenAthens to access this
service. OpenAthens is a member of the UK Federation and so it does
allow users to log into DreamSpark, and users doing this are identified
as students.
We worked closely with Microsoft last year on this project to ensure
that OpenAthens users were able to use DreamSpark.
I have just tried using my account to download some software, and it did
identify me as a student. We don't currently assert 'student' through
the Gateway, but we can do if this is something Microsoft requires. I
will drop an email to our contact at Microsoft to ask him to confirm
that they don't require 'student' to be asserted. I will let the list
know what he says.

Looks interesting. We currently use AthensIM (which is supposedly
equivalent to Shibboleth 1.2) but only for our internal apps and Athens.
Does anybody know if it would be capable of joining this federation?
Otherwise it will just have to wait until we've finished implementing a
newer install of true Shibboleth.
