PhD Studentship
Analogue and numerical modelling of tectonic structures
MIET research group
Department of Geology

One PhD studentship will be soon available that would be suitable for
someone with a degree in Geology or Earth Sciences, with interest in
Structural Geology and some background in mathematics.
The studentship is linked to a broader MIET project entitled “Modelling
and interpretation of tectonic structures in transpressive settings”
The main objectives of this project are: (a) 3D modelling of strain
partitioning and localization processes, and characterization of their
mechanical, kinematical and rheological controls, and (b) modelling of
the relations between strain localization and magmatism. Modelling will
be based on the study of natural examples from geologically well-known
areas corresponding to transpressional settings. The main field
reference areas are, in addition to the Variscan of the Pyrenees, the
Variscan of NE Sardinia, the Archean Rainy Lake zone in the Western
Superior Province (Canada) and the Panafrican of the Anti-Atlas inliers
in Morocco.

The studentship will run for four years and the amount provided will be
of about 1120 EUR brut per month during the first year and about 1400
EUR brut per month during the other 3 years.

The 2008 call is not yet published in the BOE (The Spanish Government
Bulletin) but it is imminent (probably between 19 and 22 of February).
The requirements and details for application will be the same or very
similar to those in the previous 2007 call (convocatoria 2007).
A requirement for the applicants is a Degree in Geology / Earth Sciences
obtained after 01/01/2004.
