There is a Greenwich in the Orwell estuary, about 2km downstream from the centre of Ipswich. I've always assumed that it was a recent transfer from London. But I've just noticed Granewich in a deed in 1374, which must refer to this place. So now I wonder:
1. Is the spelling with -a- compatible with 'green'?
2. Could this still be a transfer at this date?
Ekwall, in his book on wic names, discusses Greenwich in Wiltshire and Derbyshire, but not this one.
