1807 Commemorated is a project based at the University of York concerned
with mapping and analysing public debate and activity regarding the
bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 by the British
Parliament. The bicentenary has acted as a spur to the development of a
number of museum exhibitions and art installations regarding enslavement,
emancipation and abolition in museums and galleries across Britain.
Through these activities this project is concerned with identifying and
understanding how 1807 is being marked by different agencies and
communities in Britain and the consequences of this for the expression of
national, local and community identity, and for the development of a range
of social debates addressing multiculturalism and social inclusion.
The project works with the British Museum, the International Slavery
Museum, part of the National Museums Liverpool, the British Empire and
Commonwealth Museum in Bristol, the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich,
the Museum in Docklands in London, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
and the Wilberforce House Museum in Hull.
We invite museum practitioners and academics to debate the issues of
representation and recognition concerned with the history and legacy of
the transatlantic slave trade on the project website. This site which is
still being developed features discussion forums, interviews and reports
of the findings of the project.
