The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancy
PhD Student (Social Psychology) Persuading through smart agents (V39.433)
at Human-Technology Interaction, Department of Technology Management.
The Department of Technology Management offers a BSc in Industrial Engineering and Management Science (Technische Bedrijfskunde), a BSc in Innovation Sciences (Technische Innovatiewetenschappen), a BSc in Industrial Engineering for Health Care and MSc programmes in Innovation Management, Operations Management and Logistics, Technology and Policy, and Human Technology Interaction. Education and research in the department focus on the development and use of technology in a business and society-oriented context. Research is design and application oriented, based on fundamental scientific insights and methods.
The sub-department of Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) works on research and teaching about the functioning of humans, as social beings, in interaction with technological environments. The motivations and capacities of human users are considered as the basis for the development of functional, usable and enjoyable products, systems and environments. The group works on three main themes: environment-behavior relations, consumer behavior and cognitive engineering.
The group contributes to the bachelor programs Technical Innovation Studies, Business Engineering in the Health Care Domain and runs the 2-years Master program Human Technology Interaction. Furthermore the group participates in the J.F. Schouten Graduate School for User-System Interaction and the 2-year Design program for User-System Interaction.
Tasks
The PhD student will conduct his/her research in the project ' Persuading households to save energy through smart agents'. At the core of the project is the belief that intelligent systems should stimulate users to adopt energy saving behavior by means of persuasion, rather than by taking over control. The ultimate aim is to develop personalized agents in the form of displays or robotic interfaces that provide feedback and suggestions in an attractive and non-disturbing way. The agents collect information on consumption patterns through, e.g., power-consumption meters, and use that information for generating feedback and suggestions. The main challenge of the research is to combine psychological and technological knowledge as to identify and exploit successful human-agent interactions.
The present PhD project, which is one of four subprojects, will focus on the agent-user relationship from a social-psychological perspective. That is, it will investigate under which conditions the agent will be accepted by the user as a trustworthy and competent actor who can function as a valuable information source and who can be relied upon concerning various controlling tasks.
This PhD position is embedded in the KNAW-acknowledged J.F. Schouten Graduate School for research in User-System Interaction.
Requirements
For this position we are interested in candidates with a solid background in social or cognitive psychology. In addition we require an interest in the development of smart systems and the willingness to engage in the co-development of such systems. Candidates with a master in Human-Technology Interaction, Social or Cognitive Psychology or related programs are invited to apply. The PhD candidate is expected to deliver a PhD thesis and a number of scientific publications within a period of 4 years.
Appointment and Salary
We offer:
• a full-time temporary appointment for a period of 4 years, preferably starting as soon as possible
• a gross monthly salary of € 1,956 during the first year up to € 2,502 during the fourth year of the appointment
• a broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, child care, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities.
