MRC-funded PhD studentship in statistical genetics
Modelling genetic and environmental risk factors in complex disease
Supervisors: Professor Cathryn Lewis, Dr. Mike Weale
Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, King’s College London
Length: 3 years
Start date: Flexible, but before October 2008
The studentship is available in the Department of Medical and Molecular
Genetics, at King’s College London School of Medicine (Guy’s Hospital
site), working with the Statistical Genetics Unit, led by Cathryn Lewis.
The group comprises statistically-trained staff developing research
methods to identify genes for common human disorders.
Most common human diseases have a genetic component, and scientists are
making progress in identifying specific genes that contribute to risk.
Environmental risks factors also affect risk of disease. A major
statistical challenge is to collate information on all known genetic and
environmental risk factors to estimate an individual’s risk of disease, or
identify specific population subgroups that are at increased risk for
disease. In this project, the student will develop statistical methods to
model risk factors for human diseases. We will use Crohn’s disease as a
test case, where smoking and genetic mutations in several genes are known
to increase the risk of developing disease.
This project will be of interest to students with a background in
statistics, mathematics or epidemiology, who also have an interest in
biomedical research. Students with a biological background and strong
numerate skills will also be considered. Candidates should hold a good
honours degree (first or upper second class, or equivalent for EU
applicants). Previous experience in genetics is not required as training
will be provided. The current student stipend is £14,350 per annum, and
the standard UK residence eligibility criteria for MRC studentships apply.
