italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
I have experienced this, Francesco.
For eight consecutive years when I was at the University of
Leicester, I organized marathon readings of a cantica of the Commedia
-- we almost got through the Commedia three times this way. I
organized things so that my students would each read one canto.
However, there were times when there were more canti than students,
so sometimes a brave soul would try to read Dante in Italian, without
knowing Italian. On the occasions I witnessed such attempts, the
results were not pretty.
That is why I learned, for the sake of Dante's spirit, to ask such
people to read their canti either in English or in another language
in which they were expert; over the years, these languages included
French (with the Pézard translation), German and Spanish.
I wish you every success with your considerations of getting people
to read Dante aloud. I firmly believe in its efficacy and its enjoyment.
Best wishes, George
