Working under the supervision of Professor Richard Healey, the post-holder will undertake GIS-based analysis of 19th century US census and railroad network datasets.
The post is funded by ESRC and the project will investigate the migration of heavy industrial workers in the North-East USA in response to transportation developments and changing employment opportunities.
The tasks of the post holder will include GIS analysis of county and individual-level census data, railroad GIS development and assisting with the linkage of census and non-census data sources to investigate migration patterns. The successful candidate will also be expected to assist in the preparation of academic papers. .
Applicants should have a good undergraduate honours degree, knowledge of standard GIS and database software and preferably a relevant postgraduate qualification. A sound grasp of basic statistical methods would also be advantageous. The post is available from April 1st 2008.
