Dear list,
Neil's email has reminded me of one of my own problems, that of a missing
explosives factory. Does anyone out there know anything, especially the
whereabouts, of a factory at Withnell, Lancs? It was owned by the Lancashire
Explosives Company with a head office in Manchester. The factory was built
in the early 1890s and probably worked until the 1930s at which time is was
owned by ICI/Nobel's. The factory produced Permitted explosives (i.e. for
use in coal mines) such as bellite and Withnell Powder. The company started
in Sweden in the early 1880s, headed (I think) by Carl Lamm, the inventor of
bellite. The company had a brief and abortive effort to build a plant on the
Isle of Man before heading for the mainland. I have checked with the
archaeological authorities in Lancashire but there is no record on the local
sites and monuments record.
