I agree with these sentiments. It is imperative that students should learn
how to search the literature and if they have done it and still require
help, that they state specifically what they have done. It might be a good
idea for them to see their supervisors before they even ask for help on the
list.
Normally, I don't answer these mails because I don't think it is a good use
of the list, but I felt quite upset at the reaction of the student to Ann
Thomson's reply. The reply was totally justified.

While this site is an excellent resource for colleagues who are having
particular difficulty locating published sources or accessing individual
expertise I support the view that help can not be assumed and the more
information that can be provided with the request the better. This is
especially important in relation to developing independence in the
preparation of student midwives.

The tone is because you had not informed us where you had searched and
because I frequently,as do others, have similar requests. If I know where
you have already searched then I will know whether I can help you further.
So, please tell us where you have searched and not found anything against!

There is no need for that tone at all, Ann. I've found several work on
benefits which is why i asked for anything 'against'....

Before you ask for others to do your literature review it would be really
helpful if you could tell us what you have alreday done!

Hello all,
I am student midwife doing a literature review titled 'Exploring the impact
of one to one support during labour on birth outcome'. Would be grateful of
any direction especially to a source that would provide an argument against
-to allow for critical analysis.
Thank you.
