At Wessex Archaeology, we use SmarterStats (a log-based stats system) and
Google Analytics. The two have been run in tandem for over two years and, as
most people find, produce very different results.
Before using Google Analytics I reported to our Trustees the figures from
SmarterStats. I am finding the figures from GA to be 60-70% less, which was
interesting to explain to our non-technical Board. However, I do find the GA
figures to be much more realistic and useful.
I have used the combined statistics of the last two years collected by GA
regarding browser preferences and screen resolutions to feed back into the
redesign of our website (to be launched in a few months). These, and the
myriad other statistics gathered by GA have been very useful indeed.
On another note, we use FeedBurner (www.feedburner.com) to gather statistics
on the use of our RSS feeds. FeedBurner was acquired by Google last year,
and I would imagine that it will eventually be incorporated into Google
Analytics in some way.
For those of you with Flickr accounts, it is now possible to see detailed
statistics on your photos (including referring domains), rather than just a
cumulative number of visitors.
Cheers,
Tom
