I'm listening Mike !!
I have set in train a request for a formal response to Graham's original
question and will follow up as helpfully as I can. In my role as Head of
Complaints my remit includes listening to feedback and seeing if the
Department can improve its services.
I will get back to Graham and the list but may not be until end of
February.
best wishes

Please respond to
Roddham Mike
Some time ago there was a meeting between the DoH publishing managers and
librarians which I attended. We gathered that each department within DoH
pays for its own printing/publishing and therefore decides how many to
produce. Prolog just distribute whatever they are given. It might be time
for another meeting, as there was never any follow-up. Is this something
Veronica could arrange (if you're listening?)

I take Zena's broad point about the broader issue of the DH shedding
its printing costs. However, the question I was raising was the
narrower one of whether the titles they do say are published in hard
copy are, in practice, actually obtainable, either without an
unnecessarily frustrating application process or, in some cases, at
all. Further evidence from LIS-Medical land would be useful.

Dear people - you are all getting frustrated - and for no avail. You
will not change a mighty monolith like the DoH!! They do this
because it's much cheaper to force the printing costs onward down the
chain. It is possible that a minimum number have to be printed - it
would be interesting to enquire if a print copy is required to sit in
the House of Commons Library, or that of the Lords. Under the guise
of saving the planet, we might also try to make our enquirer go print
it out: but we are here to give a service, so some of us will -
perforce - spend some time by the printer. Might I respectfully
advocate you invest in a product called 'Unibind'? This will give a
proper spine, which won't crumble with age, & can be suitably
labelled; you can, if necessary, edit your bound document. Binding
takes 90 seconds. It's a product that works.
I am not being paid for this....neither is any member of my
family.....

I had the same problem with the recent Cancer Reform Strategy
Although it looks as if it should be available in hard copy
(and some print copies do exist, presumably distributed to the
great and the good), this is not and will not be available in
hard copy from the Department of Health ? I spoke to a member
of the Cancer Team at DH, and he confirmed this.
I think that such an important (and lengthy ? 144 pages)
document should be available in print ? I would be prepared to
pay a reasonable price for a bound version to keep in the
library. If they are doing a print run anyway, surely it would
be economic to print more and recover some of the costs from
purchasers?

Subject: Getting hard copy reports from DH Publications Line
Afternoon all,
Has anyone else had this problem with DH Publications response
Line? Asking (after the usual, repetitive, irritating delays
and questions) for a recent publication - which, when viewed on
the DH site shows that it is however many pages in A4, and on
the PDF version that further copies are available from the
publications line ? only to be told that it is available in PDF
only? In today's case it was a December title that appeared in
the current The Week. Am I misunderstanding what is available
in hard copy? Or do they just run out of print copies?
If it's not just me, does anybody know how/where to take these
queries up with DH?
