Hi Nick,
The 50p per user (i.e. for the total of students & faculty) figure was intended as a means to allow institutions to make rough worst-case calculations when none of us had more concrete information we could base things on. Prices were updated to the ~£1k to ~£10k range when we had more information and these have now been updated again (maybe downdated should be a word?).
Regarding choices: Within OpenAthens you can use pretty much whatever authentication system (or combination of them) you choose be it Shibboleth, Classic Athens, AthensDA, iChain, OpenID, InformationCard (i.e. MS CardSpace), etc.

Hi
Would it be correct to say that an institution currently using ATHENSDA but looking into Shibboleth has two choices:
Go ahead with Shibboleth and integrate that with the OpenAthens gateway (which ahas a cost of between £1K and £10K for the OpenAthens license).
Stay in the AthensDA world but switch to Open Athens. (With a cost of £1K to £10K - ie Open Athens replaces the need for the AthensDA subscription (which was being talked about as about 50p per user))
Thanks

It wouldn't be wrong to think of it that way. The main thing to consider when thinking about the gateway is what I alluded to earlier - i.e. that the gateway alone can't do anything without the underlying Athens (or
OpenAthens) service.

Yes; the gateway and the underlying Athens service are both covered by our contract with JISC till then. It's only after that point that things change and then only for institutions that choose not to subscribe.

Andrew, thanks for your clarifications. To assist with planning, am I
right in assuming then that the shibb2athens gateway will remain fully
operational for all Athens sites up to 31 July 2008 (i.e. there are no
plans to change the current facility prior to the new regime)?
Thanks, Mike
