If I rang up and said - 'I'm on your register. I paid my Council Tax last
year over the phone. You've got my details. I now want to pay this years. If
the employee then reads out my account number etc - I could be anybody.

Subject: Re: [data-protection] Bank details
Can't believe it's an Act, there may be some guidelines issued, maybe
internally by some well meaning manager, but
I am not sure of the validity. I suppose if it's done pleasantly "could you
just repeat your account number for me,
please" then it's no problem, but I wish people wouldn't keep hiding behind
"The Data Protection Act"!
If I have given the account number, what harm is there in asking for it to
be repeated. If my account number was
read out first by the operative, THEN I would be unhappy. This though has
dubious advantages IMO.
