SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
**New seminar announcement and advance call for abstracts**
Intersections of Gender, Class and Work
Venue: Newcastle University, UK
Date: 12th May 2008
'...intersectionality is the most important theoretical contribution that women's studies, in conjunction with related fields, has made so far' (McCall, 2005:1771)
We are a group of postgraduates in the School of Geography, Politics & Sociology at Newcastle, coming from international and inter-disciplinary backgrounds. We are interested in exploring how gender, class and work identities alter material and subjective experiences of, and shape, social change.
We are looking to provide a forum to engage with current debates and theories, focusing discussion around the concept of inter-sectionality (accounting for the specificities of class, race, gender, age, sexuality, disability etc) and how these might influence how we do feminist research in practice.
The aim of this one-day event is to provide a friendly environment for the cross-fertilisation of ideas across institutions and between research clusters. This seminar will be inter-disciplinary and broad in its focus.
Seminar Format
We welcome abstracts and posters from Masters and PhD students that address the following seminar themes:
o intersections of work, class and gender
o changing gender relations at work and in the home
o space, place and the shaping of identities
o ethnicity and gender
o gendered work identities and practices
o commodification of emotional and aesthetic labour
o methodological implications of inter-sectionality
Our aim is for key themes and discussion points to emerge that can be built upon in future events. In addition, there will be opportunities for selected papers to be published in an online journal.
Please submit abstracts between 200-250 words to: [log in to unmask]
