I have been a very interested lurker (ie eager reader) throughout this
thread about 'Screening of Children'.
I thought I had a clear position, but the discussion has unsettled my
thinking. I have been printing out emails, thinking through arguments
going to and from work, and tinkering with my lecture notes as a result.
My position has not shifted, but my ability to construct arguments and
defend my position has improved as a result of the articulate and
compelling posts by John, Paul, Rachael, David, and others.
I only want to say - (partly in response to Paul) that these emails may
feel wearisome to write, but they have been interesting to read. I have
colleagues who would fail Paul's 'laugh out loud test'. It makes me feel
a lot less insecure at my work when I get the chance to hear more able
and more articulate contributors to this list make the arguments I
struggle to make in my teaching. The fact that we are constantly forced
to critically reflect on and defend our position might be a strength of
community psychology. It is probably wearisome too though!
