*In memoriam*

Some Digest readers will already know of the untimely death of Tony
Burgess on Saturday 5/1/2008. Tony was the Learning and Skills Council's
Senior Policy Manager for Technology in Learning, and an active
supporter of ALT. Tony's funeral and a celebration of Tony's life were
held on 25/1/2008, and I attended on ALT's and my own behalf. Tony's
family have chosen for donations in lieu of flowers to go to the Helena
Kennedy Foundation: http://www.hkf.org.uk/, and donations can still be
sent to J Worley, Funeral Director, 344 High Street, Berkhamsted,
Hertfordshire, HP4 1HT.

The Lab Group is an Association for Learning Technology-supported
collaboration between labs which undertake research and development in
learning mediated by technology. This second Lab Group Open Day is
generously sponsored by JISC, with facilities on the day provided by
Oracle. The Open Day will:

* enable around a dozen member labs to showcase some of their work,
discuss the concepts that lie behind it, answer questions about it, and
get feedback on it from other labs;
* give participants from policy-making and funding bodies to keep
abreast of developments, and improve their understanding of what is
going on in the development and research community.

There is no charge for attendance, and you can book from
http://www.alt.ac.uk/. Booking deadline 11/2/2008.

2.4. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype
