PhD Opportunities in Statistics: Lancaster University.
The statistics group at Lancaster University is one of the leading
groups in the UK, and was awarded the highest grade (6*) at the most
recent Reasearch Assessment Exercise. The group has a large number of
PhD studentships available for 2008/09; including at least one open to
non-UK students.
The research interests of the group are broad, and include: Bayesian and
computational statistics, extreme values, statistical genetics and
bioinformatics, medical statistics and epidemiology, spatial statistics,
wavelets and time series, applied probability, operations research, and
social statistics. Applications for PhDs in any of these or related
areas are encouraged.

DETAILS OF STUDENTSHIPS:
(a) We have a number of EPSRC studentships each year. These are for a
duration of three and half years. The studentships come with an enhanced
stipend of £2,000 above the usual research council stipend. (For
students starting in October 07 their initial stipend was £14,600 per
annum).
(b) We have been allocated FOUR ESRC studentships for PhDs in Social
Statistics. These are aimed at students with a social science background
who wish to learn and apply modern statistical methods; or for students
who have a mathematical background, and want to do statistical research
with applications in the social sciences. The studentships come with an
enhanced stipend of £3,000 above the usual research council stipend. The
duration of studentship could be either four years or three years
depending on whether the student needs to have one year of Masters
training before starting a PhD. The deadline is end of March, 2008. For

(c) The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Postgraduate
Studentships are three year studentships which cover fees (at Home/EU

Full EPSRC and ESRC studentships are only available to students who
fulfil the Research Council's UK residency conditions. The FST
postgraduate studentships are open to ALL students.
