Research Assistant in Public Engagement of Science

The Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London,
is seeking a highly motivated professional to support its work in the
public engagement of science related to the cs4fn project
(http://www.cs4fn.org/).
The Department is a national and international leader in the public
communication of science with, for example, its Sodarace
(http://www.sodarace.net) and cs4fn (http://www.cs4fn.org) projects.
cs4fn is a
combination of magazine, webzine and linked live shows which aims to
enthuse school students and others about computer science as well as
Science, Engineering and Maths more generally. The focus is on getting
across core computer science concepts and leading edge research in a fun
and accessible way - for example using magic tricks, links to films, TV
and music, games and puzzles.
We have now received significant support for cs4fn from EPSRC in the
form of a 5-year Partnership for Public Engagement grant. We are
therefore seeking to recruit a public communicator/research assistant to
support all aspects of the project. Activities will include researching
and writing articles, maintaining webpage content, support in the
production of the magazine, developing online interactive material and
developing participative research projects to engage the readership in
areas of computer science and linked Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics subjects.
The successful candidate will have at least a postgraduate degree in
computer science or a related discipline and a strong interest in
communicating computer science research to the general public. Excellent
oral and written communication skills are vital, including the ability
to communicate advanced concepts to children, as is the ability to meet
deadlines and think creatively. This post is full time and will be
for 3 years in the first instance with a possibility of a 2 year
extension.
Salary will be in the range of UKP 25,681 - UKP 30,968 per annum inclusive
depending on qualification and skills, with benefits including 30 days'
annual leave (plus statutory holidays) and pension scheme.
