Dear Colleagues,
The Foundation for the Sociology of Health Illness, the trust which owns the
journal of that name, is offering increased funding of PhD awards, research
initiation grants, support for symposia and workshops and postgrad student
travel. For further details please see the Foundation website:

***PhD Awards: The Foundation has increased its part-funding of 1+3 PhD
awards in medical sociology. For postgrads starting in 2008/09, the
foundation will offer £8k pa towards the student stipend and £3k pa to the
host department. Please note applications can only be accepted from would-be
supervisors, not would-be students. For details on eligibility and on how
prospective supervisors can apply (deadline 31/1/08) see the postgraduate
awards section of the website.
***Research Initiation Grants. The Foundation will now offer up to £10k to
support medical sociologists needing seedcorn funding to prepare major
research bids. The funding is available to cover topics such as
collaborators travel, a preliminary collaborators meeting, pre-pilot work, a
literature survey, etc. For further details see the Research Initiation
Grants section of the website.
***Symposia & Workshops. The Foundation now provides support for a series of
workshops as well as single meeting events. Up to £15k over two years is
available for funding a series of workshops. See the Symposia & Workshops
section of the website for further details.
***Postgraduate International Travel. The Foundation has established a fund
for international conference costs and associated travel for postgraduate
students presenting medical sociology papers at international conferences.
Up to £750 is available per student. See the Postgraduate International
