The Twentieth Century
The twentieth century was a heap of corpses:
Auschwitz, Jonestown, Hiroshima, My Lai,
Cambodian clusters of skulls, shiny with dew,
range after range of mountained carcasses,
as if, when we summed it up, our world was death.
But what were we trying to say, by doing this?
So huge a crime must surely be a gesture,
but one with a meaning beyond our understanding,
like those Peruvian megaglyphs, meant to be read
from a vantage point their makers could only imagine.
