Also there are other organizations that can pay that get funding or
sometimes when I'm reading I get a cut of the door. And then there's
festivals - i've done some with the British Council who pays well or for
instance, I just went to Serbia for the first international Belgrade Poetry
festival and I got my travel, food and accommodation paid for and it was an
amazing experience. And there are a lot of festivals out there, and a lot
of grants for travel, etc. I think you have to look for it and you can do
quite a lot.
Then, of course, if you want to do a solo show which verges more on
performance, you can also perform in theatres or there are some organizers
who get tours together and those can pay. There's corporate sponsors,
government sponsors, grants from organizations - money is out there...it
just doesn't come to you. You have to find it :)

I think the CC reading fee is now $250/reading,. split in half if two
people read. The CC also covers travel up to a certain amount. Writers
can only get up to 8 readings per year, & organizers ditto, but there's
a fair amount of money in that pocket. Many of us get only one per
year, but it all depends: having a new book out helps.
Organizers are responsible for advertising & putting readers up, etc.
It's a pretty good system & has been in operation since about 1970,
getting ever larger (back then writers got as many readings as they
could find, & organizations 12 readings) so that the CC had had to cut
back the number of readings for both writers & organizations.
Still, it's one of the few ways for most poets to get anything for
their work (the royalties on a book of poetry will usually get you a
coffee or its equivalent).
