People are a bit vague about copyright law, never mind the ethical practices
the law attempts to regulate. One problem with poems especially, maybe, is
the fair use convention governing prose, which can be confusing to those who
don't think too deeply about the difference between prose and poetry.
There was an interesting piece of informal research on one of the tech sites
(ZD Net) about CD copying a while ago. One of the questions was about
borrowing CDs from friends to make a copy -- how many people thought it was
ethically ok. If I remember rightly, about 30% thought it was ok to borrow,
but if a friend made the loan (i.e. authorized you), then the figure went up
to about 40%.
