As for medieval paint, I believe the question that began this obviously engaging thread concerned the terminus a quo of using blue for OL's dress. When I think of Mary's clothing, I think of Tiziano's brilliant red. As I recall, his use of that color irritated/astonished many people. And I believe Schama addresses that issue in his _Power of Art_, which I have but not where I am now. Perhaps another list member does and could look it up :-))
