Dear Jon,
The architectural historian most directly interested in spires these days -- and one of the only
architectural historians to take them as his central subject -- is Robert Bork, who has
published widely on spires, but I have no idea whether he may have dealt specifically with
your type. You might also find something worthwhile in Maylis Bayle, ed., L'architecture
normande au Moyen Age, 2 vols (Caen, 1997), which is, of course, not about Brittany but its
close neighbour -- although there are no articles specifically on spires, there are a lot of
detailed case studies of buildings, and some general ones on various stages in the
development of Norman "Gothic", if I may be permitted to use this annoyingly vague, and
apparently infuriating, term. And if you find yourself near or at the Courtauld Institute, it would
be worthwhile asking Lindy Grant about this; she has great knowledge of Norman "Gothic"
which, likewise, may extend into darkest Brittany.
Bon chance,
Jim Bugslag
