Tony, thank you for highlighting this., we are supposed to be the
information and knowledge managers, so we should have a much more
scientific approach to all this. You missed another job recruitment
area, and that is, appointment from within without advert or
competition. Vary bad practice but seems to go on quite a lot in our
profession and not seen Cilip say much about this. Maybe working behind
the scenes?

Subject: Let's not perpetuate this 30% fewer jobs nonsense

Going more carefully into the figures provided to Council - never a bad
idea
- the "decline in jobs of 30%" that was spoken of was not calculated on
the basis of anything more intellectually rigorous than the number of
jobs being advertised in Gazette. This may or may not reflect the total
number of LIS-related jobs in the UK, but the only thing you can say for
certain is that it represents the number currently being filled in the
old-fashioned way using the easy-option traditional print advertising
channel.

There may be a decline in LIS jobs in the UK, and most of us can point
to places where this has happened/is happening. What we don't know is
the extent to which this is being compensated for my new opportunities
in LIS but outside traditional library hierarchies.

The one thing we can say for certain is that the 30% figure is only
meaningful in the context of CILIP Enterprises revenue performance. It
excludes all the professional jobs which are advertised on web sites,
lists, recruited by headhunters and agencies, jobs which are advertised
in places other than Gazette and all the other myriad new ways of
getting decent staff. And just as we can all point to shrinking library
staffs, we can give accounts of non-traditional (and definitely
non-Gazette) recruitment methods.

So, please, if we are going to make statements about workforce numbers,
let's have them based on something real and not on this sort of
confusing nonsense.

(And guess who has been reading Bad Science in the Saturday Guardian?)

Subject: Decline in Membership

I asked about this in Council yesterday. Nowadays, they do try to follow
up members who don't renew. Majority give as the reason for leaving
CILIP, that they are leaving the profession: either to retire or to take
up some other line of work.

Membership is currently 19,823 - 3.2% down on last year. This from a
peak of, I believe, 22,317 on the formation of CILIP in 2002. Membership
has therefore declined some 11%, over a period during which the number
of advertised jobs in LIS has gone down by a third. It's a big ask, to
get the membership back up within a declining market, but one which I
think all the incoming councillors will be committed to.

We discussed a Membership Marketing Action Plan, and were told that a
new Head of Corporate Marketing & Membership had been appointed.

We'll see what the new year brings...

Bruce

And always a pleasure to have Bruce's friendly & helpful support.

I agree with John - if CILIPS was really interested in knowing why
people let their membership lapse they would take steps to find out.

Really? Don't you think that if they wanted to address the issues they
would

have addressed them by now?
