I think a lot of the "eerie silence" from the new Trustees is that many of
them will not be members of lis-profession, and will still expect comments
on the CILIP election (and indeed on CILIP issues more generally) to be
posted on the CILIP Communities.
I have already asked to raise the issue of the poor election out-turn and
the non-receipt of ballot papers to be discussed at the December Council
Meeting. But if anyone wants to raise anything else, either with the new or
old Council, could they please do us the courtesy of raising it in the forum
that was set up for these issues?
As the List-Owner of LIS-PROFESSION has recently pointed out:
"This list is no longer a CILIP list and has not been for over a year.
There's little point in advising CILIP about what you think they need to do
if you aren't prepared to use their preferred communication outlets."

Here we go again, more infor from the members and maybe some lapsed

BUT eerily silent from the new trustees apart from one or 2 postings
on Cilip Communities (such an inhospitably thing to use., but our stuff,
or rather most of it has got there. But one new trustee who doesn't get
it yet. Thinks we haven't made suggestions!)
1.I've been following this with some interest. I did vote: I also think
12 too unwieldy a number. About 8 of the names were familiar - but
that's only because I've moved in different sectors.
I favour 'benevolent dictatorship', in that I have found smaller groups
tend to produce results, while large groups are merely talking shops. I
heartily agree with the comment on 'missing skills': I have been saying
this for at least 5 years; but I am not in any position of authority or
influence upon curricula.
I don't log on to 'communities' - I find email an easier option.
The piece in the Independent should be a start; and I will watch the
Trustees with respect. Trying to turn around an ailing body, while the
economy quietly goes into instability (where one of the first casualties
in any recession is information management; remember the 90s?), will be
interesting.
2.I have been most interested to see the recent correspondence. Although
professional qualifications are still recognised and valued in my
authority, I am aware that they are not elsewhere. A recent piece in the
Gazette recently summed up the current views - so when a respected
person is questioning professional status it does make you wonder why we
bother.
Society at large does not know the difference between a librarian, a
library assistant or a library attendant. We recently advertised for a
professionally qualified librarian and of 10 applicants, only one was
qualified. It does not occur to people that there is such a thing - they
would not apply for a job as a surveyor or town planner without the
appropriate qualifications.
On one hand CILIP has failed to assert the professional status of
librarians (though to be honest I think it is a battle they are never
going to win, given the image of librarians and the prevailing ignorance
of the fact that there are such things as qualifications and charter
ship) and on the other hand they are making entrants to the professional
go through a prolonged and off-putting process in order to charter. It's
hard to motivate people to go through all this in order to gain a status
no-one values - the only point is the pay rise to the next salary scale.
CILIP would say that the point of all the chartership training is to
enable us to tell the world we are professionals, but as no-one is
listening, are we just kidding ourselves
3.Many thanks for raising the issue of lack of votes, and for passing on
some of the comments you have received.
I would like to add my frustrations to the list! I moved house last
December and despite phone calls to Cilip and changing my address on my
profile on their website, it was May before my Update and Gazette
started arriving at my new address. And, you guessed it, my voting
papers were also sent to my old address, and it was too late to vote by
the time I received them. I feel that this kind of admin error, from a
professional organisation that many of us pay lots of money to every
year, is unacceptable. I feel that Cilip has very little regard for the
individual member and this may go some way to explain the lacklustre
attitude at the moment. I am however, proud to be a librarian, and have
recently started to attend meetings of my local UC&R group to become
actively involved in promoting networking amongst the profession.
And yes, I did vote for the councillors - I voted for anyone who had
been involved with public libraries, and anyone who shared my concerns
about the changing status of librarians -though there weren't very many
of them

Sounds as if you have hit a nerve given the amount of replies you are
getting. I think it is definitely worthwhile publishing comments
anonymously. I would not have replied if I thought I could be
identified.
