It is well-known across all blogs that the number of commenters is a
small proportion of readers (1% is often mentioned) (not just true of
archaeology); I think this reflects the development of blogs from a
small in-crowd to a massive number of blogs with relatively few readers
spread out between them. A good proportion of my time is now spect
browsing rather than reading in detail, so I'm not in 'commenting' mode,
especially if you have to register to comment.
Anyone who wants to track their readership can do so using Google
Analytics or a free visitor counter; this allows you to see not only
which posts are most visited, but what search terms or links led them to
your site, how long they stayed, and what other posts they read.
If the answer is that nobody visits, you might want to re-think how much
energy you put into maintaining your blog; maybe a proper website would
be more effective? Or you might market it better.
My archaeological project management blog
http://10simplesteps.blogspot.com gets almost half its visits from a
mention on the BAJR forum.
