The 38th International Ballad Conference of the Kommission für Volksdichtung
is to be held in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, from Monday evening, 28
July, to Saturday afternoon, 2 August 2008. The conference is being hosted
by the School of Welsh at Cardiff University, the premier university in
Wales and one of Britain’s major research universities. Established in 1883,
Cardiff University celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2008.
Call for Papers
While papers need not be restricted to any particular subjects but may
address any issue of concern to scholars of ballads and traditional song, we
particularly encourage presentations that treat one or more of the following
themes:
language and identity; ecology and the natural world (plants, animals,
birds, etc.); gender; ballads and the industrial revolution; performance and
orality; broadsides and print culture.
Papers will be limited to 20 minutes. Abstracts of up to 300 words, together
with requests for technical equipment, should be submitted by 30 JANUARY
2008 to the Conference Organiser, Dr E. Wyn James ([log in to unmask]).
The author’s address, affiliation and contact details should be clearly
stated, together with a brief account of the author’s career and research
interests.
Conference Location
The conference will be held in the Humanities Building on the Colum Drive
campus of Cardiff University. The campus is situated immediately north of
Cathays Park (Cardiff’s renowned civic centre), and is within a 15 minute
walk from the city centre. (Location maps are to be found on Cardiff

Cardiff is a medium-sized, compact city (approx. 300,000 inhabitants),
located on the coast of south-east Wales. It is the capital city of Wales,
and home to many Welsh national institutions, including the National
Assembly for Wales, the National Museum and Gallery, the Millennium Stadium
(home of Welsh rugby), and the Wales Millennium Centre (home of the Welsh
National Opera).
Cardiff lies on major road and rail routes from London to Ireland, and has
an international airport. Day-time temperature in late July and early August
is normally around 18ºC. It is usually fairly dry and sunny at that time of
the year – although there is always a good chance of rain!
Conference Schedule
Conference participants may register on Monday, 28 July 2008, from 3.30pm
until 8.30pm in the Humanities Building on the Colum Drive campus. (Ad hoc
registration will also be possible throughout the week.) The conference will
open formally at 9.00am on Tuesday, 29 July.
A tentative schedule of events (which may change in some of the detail) is
as follows:
(1) Tuesday and Thursday will be devoted to paper sessions in both the
morning and afternoon;
(2) There will be an (optional) Conference Excursion on Wednesday, 30 July;
(3) Friday, 1 August, will be devoted to a paper session in the morning,
while in the afternoon there will be a tour of the open-air National History
Museum (formerly the Welsh Folk Museum) at St Fagans, on the western
outskirts of Cardiff;
(4) An (optional) Conference Dinner will be held on Friday evening at
Cardiff Castle (www.cardiffcastle.com/);
(5) Saturday morning will see the closing session of the conference,
including the annual general meeting of the Kommision für Volksdichtung.
The National Eisteddfod of Wales is being held in Cardiff in 2008, during
the week beginning Saturday, 2 August, and Saturday afternoon will involve
an (optional) visit to the Eisteddfod. Information on the National
Eisteddfod, the main annual cultural festival in Wales, is to be found on
the Eisteddfod’s website (www.eisteddfod.org.uk/english/).
Travel Information
By road, Cardiff is situated on the intersection of the M4 (the motorway
which runs from London across south Wales) and the A470 (the main road from
south to north Wales).
By train, Cardiff has rail links to most UK cities
(http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/). There is a regular London-Cardiff train
service which only takes 2 hours.
By bus, National Express (http://www.nationalexpress.com/) links Cardiff to
most cities in the UK, while Megabus operates a discounted service between
Cardiff and London. Cardiff’s central bus station is situated immediately
outside Cardiff Central train station.
By air, Cardiff International Airport (CWL) is twelve miles west of the
centre of Cardiff, and has a range of domestic and international flights;
Bristol International Airport (BRS) is around an hour’s journey time by bus
and train, while London Heathrow (LHR) is in close proximity to the M4
motorway from London to Cardiff. There is a direct coach service from
Heathrow to Cardiff and to Reading railway station which connects with
inter-city rail services to Cardiff.
Registration Fee
The conference registration fee will be £50 sterling. There will be a pro
rata fee for day registrations. The fee includes the conference pack with
programme, coffees/teas during the conference, the coach to the National
History Museum (St Fagans), and entry to any evening entertainment organised
as part of the conference, but it does NOT include meals, the Conference
Excursion, the Conference Dinner, and entry to the National Eisteddfod.
The Conference Excursion and the Conference Dinner should be booked by 29
FEBRUARY 2008 on the Conference Booking Form which will be placed on the
Cardiff University School of Welsh website (www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/) in
December 2007.
The registration fee does not include the annual subscription for the KfV
(10 €).
Accommodation
Bed & breakfast/self-catering accommodation has been reserved (from Monday
evening, 28 July, until Sunday morning, 3 August) in student accommodation
in Colum Hall, which is in fairly close proximity to the Humanities Building
on the Colum Drive campus, where the paper sessions are being held. The
rooms in Colum Hall are single rooms with en-suite facilities in flats of 8
bedrooms. There are fully-equipped kitchen facilities in each flat for the
self-catering preparation of meals. Prices will be £19 per night
self-catering and £25 per night bed & breakfast.
Rooms at Colum Hall are limited and must be booked by 29 FEBRUARY 2008 AT
THE VERY LATEST. Bookings should be sent to the Conference Organiser on the
Conference Booking Form which will be found on the School of Welsh website
(www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/). Other student accommodation may be available
for late bookers, but will not be as conveniently situated for the Colum
Drive campus as Colum Hall.
A wide variety of alternative accommodation (hotels, guest houses, etc.) is
available in central Cardiff within approx. 15 minutes walk from the Colum
Drive campus. Details of such accommodation may be found on a number of

Die 38. Internationale Balladen Konferenz der Kommission für Volksdichtung
wird in Cardiff, der Hauptstadt von Wales, von Montag Abend, dem 28. Juli
bis zum Samstag Nachmittag, dem 2. August 2008, stattfinden. Die Tagung wird
ausgerichtet von der School of Welsh an der Universität Cardiff, der ersten
Universität von Wales und einer der wichtigsten Forschungsstätten in
Großbritannien. Gegründet im Jahr 1883 feiert die Universität Cardiff im
Jahr 2008 ihren 125. Geburtstag.
Aufruf zur Einsendung von Referatvorschlägen
Die Vorschläge müssen nicht auf ein bestimmtes Themenfeld eingegrenzt sein,
sondern können jedes Thema aufgreifen, das für die Erforschung von Balladen
oder traditionellen Liedern von Interesse sein kann. Wir möchten aber
besonders dazu anregen, eines oder mehrere der folgenden Themenfelder zu
behandeln:
Sprache und Identität; Ökologie und Natur (Pflanzen, Tiere, Vögel, usw.);
Gender; Balladen und die industrielle Revolution; Aufführung und mündliche
Überlieferung; Flugschriften und Druckkultur.
Die Vortragsdauer wird auf 20 Minuten begrenzt. Zusammenfassungen mit
höchstens 300 Worten, zusammen mit Angaben, welche technischen Hilfsmittel
beim Vortrag benötigt werden, sollten bis zum 30. JANUAR 2008 dem
Organisator der Tagung Dr E. Wyn James ([log in to unmask]) zur Verfügung
gestellt werden. Außerdem sollten die genaue Adresse der Referentin/des
Referenten, sowie Angaben über ihren/seinen wissenschaftlichen Werdegang und
die derzeitige Forschungstätigkeit und ihre/seine besonderen
Forschungsinteressen angegeben werden.
Tagungsort
Die Tagung wird im Gebäude der Geisteswissenschaften (Humanities Building)
auf dem Colum Drive Campus der Universität Cardiff stattfinden. Der Campus
ist nördlich des Cathays Park – dem berühmten Verwaltungszentrum von
Cardiff – gelegen und 15 Minuten zu Fuß vom Stadtzentrum entfernt.

Cardiff ist eine mittelgroße, kompakte Stadt (annähernd 300.000 Einwohner)
und liegt an der Küste von Süd-Ost Wales. Sie ist die Hauptstadt von Wales
und beherbergt viele nationale Institutionen von Wales, einschließlich der
Nationalversammlung für Wales, das Nationalmuseum und die National-Galerie,
das Millenium Stadion (Heimstätte für das walisische Rugby) und das Wales
Millenium Centre (das Haus der Walisischen Nationaloper).
Cardiff liegt an wichtigen Straßen- und Bahnlinien von London nach Irland
und hat einen internationalen Flughafen. Die Tagestemperatur Ende
Juli/Anfang August beträgt normalerweise etwa 18ºC. Meistens ist es relativ
trocken und sonnig um diese Jahreszeit, es kann aber auch mal regnen!
Tagungs-Zeitplan
Die TeilnehmerInnen der Tagung können sich am Montag, den 28. Juli 2008
zwischen 15:30 und 20:30 Uhr im Humanities Building des Colum Drive Campus
anmelden. (Ad hoc Anmeldung ist auch während der ganzen Woche möglich.) Die
Tagung wird offiziell um 9:00 Uhr am Dienstag, den 29. Juli, eröffnet.
Ein ungefährer Tagesplan (der sich in Details noch ändern kann) sieht
folgendermaßen aus:
(1) Am Dienstag und Donnerstag wird vormittags und nachmittags getagt
werden;
(2) Am Mittwoch, den 30. Juli, hat man die Möglichkeit an der
Tagungs-Exkursion teilzunehmen;
(3) Am Freitag, den 1. August wird vormittags eine Arbeitssitzung
stattfinden, den Nachmittag verbringen wir im National History Museum
(früher: Welsh Folk Museum) in St Fagans, am westlichen Rand von Cardiff,
und besichtigen das dortige Freilicht-Museum;
(4) Am Freitag hat man die Möglichkeit am Conference Dinner im Schloss von
Cardiff teilzunehmen (www.cardiffcastle.com/);
(5) Am Samstag Morgen findet die Abschluss-Sitzung der Tagung mit der
Mitgliederversammlung der Kommision für Volksdichtung statt.
Das National Eisteddfod of Wales findet in Cardiff in der Woche ab dem 2.
August 2008 statt und am Samstag Nachmittag besteht die Möglichkeit das
Eisteddfod zu besuchen. Informationen über das National Eisteddfod, das
wichtigste jährliche Kultur-Festival in Wales, kann man auf der Website des
Eisteddfod (www.eisteddfod.org.uk/english/) einsehen.
Reise-Informationen
Mit dem Auto: Cardiff liegt an der Kreuzung der M4 (der Verbindung von
London nach Südwales) und der A470 (der Hauptstraße von Süd- nach
Nordwales).
Mit dem Bahn: Von Cardiff aus gibt es zahlreiche Zugverbindungen mit anderen
britischen Großstädten (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/).
Mit dem Bus: National Express (http://www.nationalexpress.com/) verbindet
Cardiff mit den meisten Städten im Vereinigten Königreich, während Megabus
zu einem verbilligten Tarif zwischen Cardiff und London verkehrt. Der
zentrale Busbahnhof von Cardiff ist unmittelbar neben dem Hauptbahnhof von
Cardiff.
Mit dem Flugzeug: Flugreisende erreichen Cardiff über den International
Airport (CWL), der 20 km westlich vom Stadtzentrum gelegen ist und von einer
Reihe von Fluggesellschaften des In- und Auslandes angeflogen wird. Bristol
International Airport (BRS) ist etwa eine Stunde per Bus oder Bahn von
Cardiff entfernt, während London Heathrow (LHR) in nächster Nähe zur M4 von
London nach Cardiff gelegen ist. Es gibt eine direkte Busverbindung zwischen
Heathrow und Cardiff und zum Bahnhof Reading, von wo aus man die
Intercity-Bahnverbindung nach Cardiff nutzen kann.
Tagungsgebühr
Die Tagungsgebühr wird £50 betragen. Für den Besuch einzelner Tage wird eine
entsprechend niedrigere Tagesgebühr angeboten werden. Die Tagungsgebühr
berechtigt zum Besuch des Tagungsprogramms und beinhaltet die Verpflegung in
den Kaffee- und Teepausen, die Fahrt zum National History Museum (St Fagans)
und den Zugang zu allen Abendunterhaltungen, die als Teil der Tagung geplant
sind. NICHT enthalten sind die Mahlzeiten, die Tagungs-Exkursion, das
Tagungs-Dinner und der Eintritt für das National Eisteddfod.
Für die Tagungs-Exkursion und das Tagungs-Dinner sollte man sich bis zum 29.
FEBRUAR 2008 mit dem Konferenz-Buchungsformular angemeldet haben, das auf
der Website der School of Welsh der Universität Cardiff
(www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/) ab Dezember 2007 zu finden ist.
In der Tagungsgebühr ist der Mitgliedsbeitrag von 10 € für die KfV nicht
enthalten.
Unterkunft
Übernachtung mit Frühstücks-Selbstversorgung ist (von Montag Abend, dem 28.
Juli, bis Sonntag früh am 3. August) in einer Studentenunterkunft in der
Colum Hall reserviert, die relativ nah zum Humanities Building im Colum
Drive Campus gelegen ist und wo auch die Arbeitssitzungen stattfinden. Die
Zimmer in der Colum Hall sind pro Stockwerk jeweils 8 Einzelzimmer mit
Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen auf dem Flur. Es gibt voll eingerichtete Küchen
in jedem Stockwerk, so dass man sich mit Mahlzeiten selbst versorgen kann.
Für Selbstversorger kostet die Unterbringung £19 pro Übernachtung und £25
pro Übernachtung mit Frühstück.
Es gibt nur eine beschränkte Anzahl von Zimmern in der Colum Hall, darum
sollte man BIS SPÄTESTENS 29. FEBRUAR 2008 gebucht haben. Buchungen sollten
an den Tagungsorganisator mit dem Buchungsformular, das man auf der Website
der School of Welsh (www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/) finden kann, gerichtet
werden. Andere Studentenunterkünfte sind möglicherweise auch für Personen,
die sich erst später anmelden, noch zu finden. Diese sind aber in der Regel
nicht ganz so günstig zum Colum Drive Campus gelegen wie die Colum Hall.
Eine große Auswahl anderer Quartiere (Hotels, Gästehäuser etc.) sind im
Zentrum von Cardiff zu finden – etwa 15 Minuten zu Fuß vom Colum Drive

La 38ème Conférence Internationale sur la Chanson populaire de la Commission
de littérature orale aura lieu à Cardiff, capitale du Pays de Galles, du
lundi 28 Juillet (soirée) au Samedi 2 aôut 2008 (après-midi). La conférence
est organisée par l'Institut d'Etudes galloises de l'Université de Cardiff,
la première université du Pays de Galles et l'une des principales
universités de Grande-Bretagne. Fondée en 1883, l'Université de Cardiff
célèbrera son 125ème anniversaire en 2008.
Appel d'offres
Les intervenants ne sont pas astreints à un thème particulier et peuvent
traiter de n'importe quel aspect de la recherche dans le domaine de la
chanson de tradition. Toutefois, nous sommes particulièrement intéressés par
les thèmes suivants:
language et identité; écologie et savoirs naturalistes (plantes, animaux,
oiseaux, etc.); rôles sexuels; ballades et révolution industrielle;
performance et oralité; feuilles volantes et culture de l'imprimé.
Les contributions seront limitées à 20 minutes. Les résumés (300 mots max.),
ainsi que les demandes d'équipement technique devront être envoyés avant le
30 janvier 2008 à l'organisateur de la Conference, Dr E. Wyn James
([log in to unmask]). On y joindra les coordonnées de l'auteur (nom,
adresse et affiliation institutionnelle), ainsi qu'une brève notice sur sa
carrière et ses sujets de recherche.
Siège de la conférence
La conférence se tiendra dans le Bâtiment des Lettres (Humanities Building),
du campus Colum Drive de l'Université de Cardiff. Le campus est situé juste
au nord du parc Cathay, le célèbre centre civique de Cardiff, à 15 minutes à
pied du centre de la ville. (On trouvera des plans de la ville sur le site

Cardiff est une ville de grandeur moyenne (300.000 habitants environ), sur
la côte sud-est du Pays de Galles. C'est la capitale du Pays de Galles, qui
compte de nombreuses institutions galloises, telles que l'Assemblée
nationale du Pays de Galles, le Musée National, le Stade du Millénaire
(haut-lieu du rugby gallois), et le Centre gallois du Millénaire (siège de
l'Opéra national gallois).
Cardiff est situé sur les principales voies routières et ferrovières reliant
Londres à l'Irlande, et est desservie par un aéroport international. A la
fin juillet et au début d'août la température voisine autour de 18° C. A
cette date le temps est généralement sec et ensoleillé – toutefois, le
risque de pluie n'est pas exclu!
Programme de la conférence
Les participants pourront s'inscrire le lundi 28 juillet entre 15h30 et
20h30 dans le Bâtiment des Lettres du campus de Colum Drive. (Il sera
possible de s'inscrire tout au long de la semaine.)
Voici le programme préliminaire (auquel des changements de détail pourront
être apportés).
(1) Le mardi et le jeudi seront consacrés à des sessions de communications,
le matin comme l'après-midi;
(2) Il y aura une excursion (facultative) le 30 juillet;
(3) Le vendredi 1 août, la matinée sera consacrée à une session de
communications. L'après-midi sera agrémentée d’une visite de plein air du
musée d'histoire du Pays de Galles (anciennement musée populaire gallois,
Welsh Folk Museum) à St Fagans, dans l’ouest de Cardiff;
(4) Un banquet (facultatif) aura lieu le vendredi soir dans le Château de
Cardiff (www.cardiffcastle.com/);
(5) La conférence se terminera le samedi matin par l'Assemblée Générale de
la Kommission für Volksdichtung, et le samedi après-midi proposera une
visite au Eisteddfod.

Transports
En voiture: Cardiff est à l'intersection de la M4 (l'autoroute qui relie
Londres au sud du Pays de Galles) et de la route A470 (qui traverse le Pays
de Galles du nord au sud).
En train: Cardiff dessert la pluspart des villes au Royaume-Uni
(http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/). Il existe une navette ferroviaire
régulière Londres–Cardiff qui ne prend que deux heures de trajet.
En car: la National Express (http://www.nationalexpress.com/) relie Cardiff
à presque toutes les villes du Royaume-Uni; de plus, Megabus offre un trajet
bon marché entre Cardiff et Londres. La gare routière de Cardiff est juste à
côté de la gare ferroviaire.
En avion: l'aéroport international de Cardiff (CWL) est à 20 km à l'ouest du
centre de Cardiff, et offre plusieurs liaisons intérieures et
internationales; l'aéroport international de Bristol (BRS) est à environ une
heure de train ou d'autocar, et Londres Heathrow (LHR) est tout proche de
l'autoroute M4 Londres–Cardiff. Un service d'autocars direct relie Heathrow
à Cardiff et à la gare ferroviaire de Reading, qui relie les trains
inter-city à Cardiff.
Frais d'inscription
Le frais d’inscription sera 50 Livres sterling. Il y aura des réductions
proportionnelles pour ceux qui ne pourront rester pour toute la durée de la
conférence. Cette somme couvre la participation à la conférence: programme,
café/thé, transport en autocar au Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de St Fagans,
et tous les concerts et autres manifestations culturelles faisant partie de
la conférence, mais PAS les repas, l'excursion, le banquet ni l'entrée au
Eisteddfod.
Les inscriptions à l'excursion et au banquet doivent se faire avant le 29
février 2008, sur le bulletin d'inscription disponible sur le site de
l'Institut d'Etudes galloises (www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/) à partir du début
décembre 2007.
Les frais d'inscription ne comprennent pas la cotisation annuelle à la KfV
(10 €).
Hébergement
Nous avons réservé des possibilités d'hébergement en Bed &
breakfast/self-catering (du lundi soir, 28 juillet jusqu'au dimanche matin,
3 août) dans le Foyer pour étudiants de Colum Hall, assez proche du Bâtiment
des Lettres du campus de Colum Drive où se dérouleront les sessions de la
conférence. Les chambres de Colum Hall sont des chambres à une personne avec
salle de bains attenante dans des appartements de huit chambres. Chaque
appartement a une cuisine entièrement équipée pour la préparation des repas.
Le prix sera de 19 Livres sterling par nuit et de 25 Livres par nuit en Bed
& Breakfast.
Le nombre de chambres est limité et les réservations devront être faites
avant le 29 février AU PLUS TARD. Les réservations se feront auprès de
l'organisateur de la conférence à l'aide du bulletin d'inscription qui sera
disponible sur le site de l'Institut d'Etudes galloises
(www.cardiff.ac.uk/cymraeg/). Les autres foyers d'étudiants disponibles
après cette date sont moins bien situés par rapport au campus Colum Drive.
