Dear Andrew,
another guess would be that there are no onsets for some of your
conditions... SPM does not allow to model "missing" conditions by just
an all-zero regressor. If you are worried about designs with varying
numbers of non-zero regressors in terms of specifying your contrasts,
then you should have a look at the contrast manager batch module -
especially the "Contrast by session/column" option. This will allow
you to target any column in your design matrix, omitting non-existant
columns silently.
