Dear All,
Last week my colleague Mark Priestley sent a message to announce the start
of a new project here at Leeds, which I am managing. This is
the 'Disability Equality in English Primary Schools' Project - known
as 'DEEPS' (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/disability-studies/projects/deeps/)
I am now writing to say a BIG PLEASE on behalf of the DEEPS team.
We are currently looking for books and resources (action packs/DVD's etc.)
that could be used within 'mainstream' primary schools to facilitate
teaching about disability equality ('awareness'). In particular, we are
looking for things like story books or reference books that could be used
to help primary age non-disabled children understand disability and to
encourage them to develop positive attitudes towards disabled people.
Through our own searches and via the valuable information provided by a
number of disability organisations and libraries we have already
established a quite lengthy list of such books/resources - but our quest
continues!
For this reason we wondered whether we might ask members of this mailing
list whether they know of any suitable books/resources or have experience
of using such materials as part of disability equality/awareness training?
If so, we would VERY MUCH appreciate it if you would be willing to send us
the details of these materials and/or tell us about your experiences.
Just to be clear here: we are looking for books/action packs/other
resources that could be used to promote disability awareness amongst
*primary age* *non-disabled* children.
Your help in this matter would be very much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Angharad Beckett.
