Meols: the Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast.
Discoveries and Observations in the 19th and 20th centuries with a catalogue of collections.
by David Griffiths, Robert A. Philpott and Geoff Egan.
At Meols, on the north coast of the Wirral Peninsula (north-west England), a low sandy promontory
known as Dove Point was gradually destroyed by the sea during the 19th century, exposing the
remains of settlement sites along the foreshore and in the sand-dunes near the water's edge. A
group of Victorian antiquarians led by Revd. Abraham Hume made observations of the eroding
coastline and structures and retrieved thousands of dress items, tools and coins from the prehistoric,
Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods.
This, and more recent evidence, points to settlement and trade at this strategic Irish Sea landing
place from the later prehistoric to post-medieval periods: the precursor of Liverpool. This volume
presents a comprehensive study of Meols together with a catalogue of the finds, the first full-scale
appraisal since Hume?'s classic 'Ancient Meols' of 1863.
