How companies can benefit from looking backwards as well as forwards
HISTORY is more or less bunk, declared Henry Ford in 1916. The company
that bears his name is not so dismissive of the past. Ford's website
has a prominent heritage section captioned "Automotive history begins
here"; visitors can also call up a splashy site created to celebrate
the carmaker's centenary in 2003. Ford is not alone in seeking to
capitalise on its history. Bruce Weindruch, founder of The History
Factory, a "heritage management" firm that helps companies to document
and exploit their past, says that his firm is growing by 30-40%
annually.

Email Is Letter-Size In a Big-Parcel World, But Help Is Coming
Computer files are getting bigger. PDFs and PowerPoint stacks are now
the size of small tropical islands. Turn on a video camera, and you're
into gigabytes in minutes.
Move around these drives in your computer: Can do. But drop them into
an email and the computer falls to the ground, panting and pleading
for mercy. The sad truth is that email attachments aren't keeping up
with file sizes or disk drives. It's like being able to mail 12-ounce
envelopes, but no parcels or boxes.

The Hidden Risk Of File-Sharing
By JOSEPH DE AVILA
November 7, 2007; Page D1
Many of the hundreds of millions of people around the world who swap
music, movies and other digital content on their personal computers
over the Internet have inadvertently put themselves at risk of
identity theft.
Users of popular file-sharing services such as LimeWire have found
themselves victims of identity theft when their personal information
was inadvertently shared on a so-called peer-to-peer network. And
recent high-profile breaches via these networks have put thousands of
people's financial information at risk. The problem typically arises
when users set up file-sharing software and create a folder for their
downloads in the same location as their personal files.
