Information Architecture: Exploring the Fundamentals , 21 November 2007, at
Aslib, London
Programme Features
Information Architecture (IA) involves understanding your content and your users
in the context of your business and applying that understanding to the design
and structure of your online information spaces, whether intranet, website or
other online content system.
This one-day introduction will explore the fundamentals of IA and good usability
design. It will involve a blend of presentation, discussion and practical
exercises that can be taken back and applied within your own organisations.
We'll be looking at what Bob Bater, in his Knowledge Architecture
<http://www.aslib.com/training/3/03.html> course, describes as: a portfolio of
practices combining aspects of web design, usability, metadata management and
information science to create information spaces that people find both useful
and usable.
We will look at:
* what IA is and how it fits into your business and processes
* navigation and labelling systems
* usability and user analysis
* search and retrieval systems
* content and content analysis
* metadata and taxonomies
Who should attend?
* information and knowledge professionals
* intranet and product managers
* content and system owners or managers
As well as:
* those who want to know how IA might help their organisation design and
manage more usable content-rich online systems
* those who are currently dealing with users who say they can't find what
they need when they need it from their organisation's systems
* those about to embark upon an enterprise or federated search initiative,
an intranet or website redesign, or are thinking about a new content management
system
By the end of the workshop you will know:
* how to carry out an evaluation of your organisation's website/intranet
to prioritise improvements and increase usability/content findability
* how users typically look for information and interact with your
website/intranet so that you can design better search and navigation systems
* simple improvements that can be made behind the scenes with your
metadata and content publishing systems that will enhance the user experience
across your website/intranet
