Dear colleagues,
Further to my recent email about the Henry Sweet Society Colloquium at
Nottingham on March 31st, colleagues may be aware that 2008 marks the
150th anniversary of Henry Fowler's birth (of _Fowler's Modern English
Usage_ fame). I am therefore delighted to be able to announce that the
plenary paper at the colloquium will be by Professor Ingrid Tieken-Boon van
Ostade (University of Leiden), who will speak on:
Henry Fowler and the birth of the usage guide
Professor Tieken-Boon van Ostade heads a major project on "The codifiers
and the English language: Tracing the norms of Standard English at the
University of Leiden."
Just a reminder too of the deadline for abstracts, January 11th 2008. We
hope to have a small number of papers on the theme of prescriptivism, but
papers on any aspect of the history of linguistic thought are, as always,
welcome.
I attach an updated flyer for the colloquium, advertising Professor Tieken-
Boon van Ostade's plenary lecture. Please circulate it widely!
Best wishes,
Nicola
