Ethical Issues in Participatory Research
A Three Day workshop which forms part of the ESRC Research Training
Programme
Convened by Professor Carole Truman
Lancaster University, 17th – 19th December.
This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to develop an
understanding of participatory approaches to research, and to explore the
ethical aspects of such research approaches. The workshop will consist of
presentations from academic researchers, and from lay researchers who have
been involved in research studies. Each workshop session will invite
participants to share their own experiences of participatory research
and/or to take part in group work sessions to explore ethical issues which
relate to participatory research. The event should appeal to those with
little, or limited experience of participatory approaches to research (a
subsequent ‘advanced’ workshop, later in the programme will be aimed at
those with greater experience of participatory research).
Day One - Monday 17th December:
Workshops and presentations from academic researchers who are currently
active in participatory research. Professor Carole Truman will introduce
ideas about participatory research, and workshop participants will then
work in groups towards setting an agenda around ethics issues in
participatory research.
Dr Rachel Pain (University of Durham) will discuss different formulations
of ethics in the context of participatory research. She will talk about
her current research with refugee and asylum seeking young people in
Britain. An interactive group work session will allow workshop
participants to explore issues in more depth.
Day Two - Tuesday 18th December:
Today’s workshop will comprise a series of inputs and contributions from
lay researchers who have been involved in, or conducted participatory
research studies. Issues addressed will include commissioning, and
finding support for participatory research; research governance; ethical
issues in the field – managing expectations; payments and rewards for
research participants.
Day Three – Wednesday 19th December:
Drawing upon discussions from the last two days and with input from a
final speaker, today’s sessions will focus upon the challenges to
academic researchers who wish to embark upon research within a
participatory paradigm. Workshop participants will be encouraged to think
about their own research practice and the ethical barriers / opportunities
they would face in developing a participatory approach.
