Archives for London
invites you to the next in its series of seminars, to be held on 6 December
at Freemasons’ Hall, Covent Garden
INTRODUCING MEDIEVAL RECORDS
Dr Andrew Prescott
University of Wales Lampeter
For amateur researchers, practitioners and family historians, records of
the medieval period can often seem impenetrable and there appears little
hope of pushing a line of research back beyond 1500.
This talk will provide a gentle introduction to some of the categories of
medieval records that can be tackled by researchers of all kinds. Some of
the main indexes and summaries of medieval records will be described. Some
online resources will be examined. Andrew Prescott will also explain how
medieval records were compiled and look at some of the abbreviation systems
used. Among the examples, which will be discussed, are wills, deeds and
some judicial records relating to the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Andrew will
also provide an introduction to some of the books that will take you
further.
Archives for London is delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Prescott to deliver
this seminar. Andrew is a former Curator of Manuscripts at the British
Library and he was Director of the Centre for Research into Freemasonry at
the University of Sheffield from 2000-2007. He is currently Manager of
Library Services at the University of Wales Lampeter.
You will find this seminar useful if:
- you are a user interested in taking your research back further using
older records;
- you are wanting to discover more about accessible resources during the
medieval period;
- you are a practitioner who doesn’t read Latin but would appreciate some
help with locating relevant details and would like to know more.
Doors will open at 5.30pm and the talk will start at 6pm. The seminar is an
open forum and following the talk attendees are welcome to ask questions,
exchange news, and discuss matters of interest. Refreshments will be
provided.
