UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

Institute of Child Health

and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust

Centre for Paediatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Research Assistant / Research Associate

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant
or Research Associate position at the UCL
Institute of Child Health. We are looking for an
enthusiastic researcher to work on a project
investigating obesity in childhood and risk
factors in two generations of the British
population. The purpose of the work is to examine
influences on childhood obesity and how these
have changed over time. This project will provide
insights into the causes of the rising trend of childhood obesity.

The study will be based on a rich longitudinal
dataset - the 1958 British birth cohort - which
has followed individuals over multiple ages in
childhood and in adulthood, and has also obtained
information on their children.
All applicants must have a BSc and an MSc or
equivalent in statistics, epidemiology or another
related subject for this post. For applicants to
be appointed to a Research Associate (Grade 7)
they must have a PhD or an equivalent qualification.

The post holder must have a good working
knowledge of statistical methods and the use of
one or more statistical packages such as STATA,
SPSS, SAS. Analytical and problem-solving
abilities are required. Experience of analysis of
large epidemiological datasets is desirable.

The post offers an excellent opportunity to
explore and apply statistical methods to
clustered multi-generational data, in an
important area of public health research. The
post-holder will be able to develop their skills
and experience in a range of methods within a
multidisciplinary research group. There are also
opportunities for further training, possibly as part of a PhD.

Salary will be dependant on qualifications and
experience. If a Research Assistant is appointed
the salary will be on Grade 6 of the UCL salary
scales, from £23,002 - £24,403 per annum. If a
Research Associate is appointed the starting
salary will be £26,666 per annum on Grade 7 of
the UCL Salary scales. London Weighting of £2,572
is also paid per annum. The appointment is
funded for 15 months in the first instance, with
the possibility of extension subject to securing further funding.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Leah Li on
020 7813 8393
(<mailto:[log in to unmask]>[log in to unmask])
or Prof Chris Power on 020 7905 2106
