I have been looking back at a study we did a few eyars ago whenthe new
BD SST-II and PST-II tubes were introduced (poster at AACB Annual
meeting 2003).
We found that in a spun SST-II tube, stored up to 3 days in our usual
routine sample fridge, the glucose was stable (average drop 0.1 mmol/L
(max drop 0.4 mmol/L on day 1 but this came back up to -0.2 on day 2))
when the sample was taken from the tube and the tube not re-spun prior
to taking the aliquot. If the Gel tube was re-spun prior to removal of
the sample the average fall after 2 days was about 0.5 mmol/L and a max
of about 1.2 mmol/L).
PSTII tubes (heparin) were less stable with aliquots from the un-spun
primary tube falling an average of 0.6 mmol/L and the spun tube about
0.7 mmol/L in three days.
Our protocol for requests for add-ons for glucose on these tubes is up
to 24 hours for PST-II and 3 days for SST-II but the tube must not be
respun.
Re-spinning the tubes also had effects on LD, potassium (as expected)
and lactate.
