List members may be interested in the Faces of Manchester project
organised by Nowgen, A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare.
‘Faces of Manchester’ aims to stimulate interest and discussion about the
genetic, social and cultural aspects of the human face as part of the
first Manchester Science Festival. Nowgen has created artwork to display
around the city and is running a number of events next week.
Faces of Manchester lunchtime events series
22-26 October, 12.00 – 1.30pm at The Nowgen Centre, 29 Grafton Street,
Manchester
These consecutive lunchtime events will explore current issues in genetics
and identity. Speakers will present scientific, ethical, social, legal and
political comment on topics such as facial disfigurement, the future of
facial surgery, facial evolution and our perception of beauty. We will
also explore how family resemblance affects expectations of personal
health, and how technology might impact upon our future genetic identity.

‘Faces of Manchester’ evening debate
Facing Up To Addiction: Is there such a thing as an Addictive Personality?
Tuesday 23 October 6:30-9:15pm at The Museum of Science and Industry in
Manchester
Chaired by Quentin Cooper, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Material
World’, this panel and public discussion explores why it is that some
people develop addictions. Discover current views from leading researchers
about the genetic, social and psychological factors that influence
addictive behaviour. The floor will then be opened to discussion and
interactive voting on questions including: Is there such a thing as
addictive personality?
