I think in Von Trier's Dogville the narrator rather than the character
addresses the audience directly
Film studies often borrows from theatre and calls the direct address
"breaking the fourth wall"
You mat also want to have a look at the theatre of Brecht and Boal in
relation to the use of direct address as an alienation device
