Consumption a workshop to highlight the data available from government surveys

Wednesday 7 November 2007
Graduate School of Education, Queen's University Belfast

Our roles as consumers and our patterns of consumption are central to who we
are, what we do and our consumer society. ESDS surveys allow researchers to
look at many different areas of consumption, for example, health and
consumption (lifestyle factors such as eating, drinking, smoking, exercise)
and environmental consumption (the products we consume and our choices of
transportation).

This introductory seminar is aimed at those with little or no experience of
microdata from government surveys, or those with some experience of these
surveys who require an introduction to the consumption content of the datasets.

The morning will comprise a presentation from ESDS Government staff to
introduce the government surveys available for research and teaching, with
time built in for questions and discussion. The afternoon session will
introduce the concepts of consumption as used in sociology, health research,
and economics and will examine the wealth of data available from the
government surveys on a range of different consumption issues. The research
value of the consumption data will be highlighted through research exemplars.

ESDS Government Annual Research Conference 2007
All Consuming: Consumption research findings from government surveys

Thursday 1 November 2007
British Academy, London

This one-day conference focuses on research evidence from large-scale
government surveys relating to consumption. Papers cover a range of
consumption issues, including consumption by older consumers and children as
well as the consumption of food, culture and private transport.

The conference will be relevant for those with an interest in consumption
and associated policy areas such as expenditure, service planning and
health. The day seeks to present research with policy relevance and we
particularly welcome attendance from the policy makers, analysts and senior
academics.

New ESDS Government searches

ESDS Government Survey Finder

This tool allows you to search across the ESDS Government surveys to find
which surveys contain the topics you need for your research. The form can be
found at http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/esds/surveyfinder/ and it allows you to enter
up to three terms. The software searches for these terms on the variable or
value label information held for each survey.

------------------------------------

Variables search

A variable search is available for each ESDS Government-supported survey via
the 'Variable search' link on the side menu of the survey page. Variables
are listed with further information giving the distribution of each variable
and any additional information available. The 'Information and Download'
links take you to the ESDS Access page for that survey.
