I would recommend Janis Langins, Conserving the Enlightenment: French Military Engineering from Vauban to the Revolution (London: MIT Press, 2004). It assesses Vauban's contribution in the wider context of French engineering. There are reviews of this book in various academic journals, one of which in French History, 21 (Mar. 2007), I wrote.

Can anyone recommend some key sources - in English and preferably quite
easily accessible - that assess the contribution of Vauban to the
history and development of military architecture. I have read Andrew
Saunders' Fortress Britain and picked a few things out of that - but is
there something more focused on Vauban, his achievements and
significance?

Thanks.

John
