medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

she is, perhaps, the very nice lady --who spoke perfect English-- whom i saw
in the shop every time i visited in the winters of the '80s, when i was living
in Chartres but going to Paris to buy books every month or so.
the shop (on the tiny, block long Rue Gozlin, just across the street from St.
Germain-des-Pres) is quite small --at least in its public area-- but
beautifully appointed, lined with fine books and with an early 16th c.
printing press providing "atmosphere."
one of the Hidden Treasures of Paris.
definitely worth a visit, if one is in the neighborhood.
shopping for books both in France and in the U.S. over the last 30 years or so
i have increasingly come across the curious phenomenon of nearly illiterate
book dealers (who seem to have proliferated greatly recently with the onset of
on-line book dealing).
the present M. Jammes (whom i assume is André, probably the son of the
founder, Paul) is in a class by himself, a touch of "Old Europe" (or so i like
to think).
his catalogues are quite remarkable works of profound erudition, usually built
around immaginative subjects and clearly the product of years of deliberate
and patient collecting in that area --they are unlike any other catalogues
i've ever seen, really.
ah, here's a photo of "the distinguished bookseller Paul Jammes in his Paris
shop," by André Kertész

(i don't remember seeing the stove in my visits in the '80s)
and one of the establishment's catalogues

and another one, on "LIBERTINS ÉRUDITS" (quoi?)

notice of another one, on "Belles ecritures" (i believe i've got that one)

and, one of my favorites, "Le bûcher bibliographique. Collection de libres
condamnés poursuivis et détruits En vente à la Librairie Paul Jammes à
Paris"

thanks again, Jean Luc, for the memories.
