medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A somewhat different publishing conundrum: I just had an article appear in
an anthology after, uh, five years in the pipeline, and all for free. But
anthologies can be notoriously difficult to get together and published. On
this particular project, at least two publishers committed and then
withdrew.
The longest I've ever waited for a periodical article to appear is 2 1/2
years, for an essay in a well regarded quarterly from a university press.
Semiannual pubs can get backed up really easily, so the two years doesn't
surprise me too much, and proofs won't come until the editor has gotten some
peer feedback. Not getting reader reports would be more of a worry to me,
and I'd be even more concerned if the editor hasn't responded at all.
I think I'd be very direct and try to get a firm timeline from the editor
about publication. Since the article was invited but unpaid, I think you're
within your rights to expect a reasonable timeframe for publication and
could consider withdrawing the essay and submitting it somewhere else once
your internal deadline has passed. How long do you want to wait? That's
tougher...

PS and OT: Has anyone dealt with a situation in which you believe your work
was plagiarized (unintentionally or not?)--or found an article (or at least
a significant portion) whose language, approach, and conclusions
uncomfortably mirror your own (earlier) publication on the same text or
subject?

Learned society, no money involved for anyone except subscribers. Two
years behind in publication. Semi-annual. Editor asked for the article,
wanted it to be the featured article in a theme issue. Have never seen
proofs, or report from peer review [which I requested].
