Well, if it's two years behind, we haven't come to May 2006 yet :-)
The editor is most probably suffering from a depressive illness (it rather
goes with the territory). I suppose you could ask the President if the new
editor will still want your article (you do still have a copy of the final
version?). The ad-hoc committee set up to deal with the situation will be
particularly grateful, because the editor won't talk to them, so they won't
be able to get their hands on any of the material... (One society skipped
two volume numbers when they resumed publication, assuming that the editor
would either produce the missing volumes as promised, or hand over the
requisite material to them...)
