Dear Mary, Wendy et al

Graduate recruiters [Ernst & Young Careers et al] are actively using 
Facebook to attract applicants but some employers are, apparently, also 
using it to do some background research on applicants' claims!

Epigram, Bristol University's independent student newspaper, has published 
a number of Facebook related articles in its Monday 01/10/07 issue 
including:

'Students at risk of identity theft' - page 6

'Is Facebook stealing your identity?' - page 9
- According to the article, 129 University of Bristol staff have Facebook 
profiles and 'Unless you are completely vigilant with your privacy settings 
these people have the same access to your [students'] photos, wall posts, 
groups and friends as other people on the University of Bristol network'.
- '...one in five employers is vetting potential recruits on Facebook and 
similar websites...' and HE institutions are also using it to investigate 
reports [i.e. viewing photos] of students' 'bad' behaviour.


In an earlier exchange on this subject, Phil Bradley suggested 'Facebook is 
merely the latest incarnation of the pool table.' I'm not sure this analogy 
is accurate; I suggest Facebook usage amongst students is as prevalent as 
drinking alcohol is - fine in moderation but with a range of side effects 
too!
