Disability Awareness: Physical, Sensory & Intellectual Access for Museums, Libraries, and Archives

Date: Friday 5th October 2007

Time: 10.00am to 4.00pm

Venue: Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, London N17 8NU

For all staff and volunteers in museums, libraries, and archives.

This workshop sets out to explain how the DDA and DED can work for you to assist you to increase the number of visitors/users of your facilities. At present, people with disabilities feel that museums and archives hold nothing much for them and frequently find libraries daunting to use. We will show you how simple adjustments can make you and your visitors far more relaxed, without spending huge amounts of cash on expensive equipment.

The day will cover:

* Terminology - 'disabilities' and 'inclusiveness'

* The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and Disability Equality Duty (DED)

* Understanding - the issues, constraints, arguments, and opportunities

*         Good and bad practice

* Relating potential to reality - looking at the collections, environments, and current facilities of museums, libraries and archives

The session is mostly interactive, with a number of workshops throughout the day, and on-going support can be offered following the day, should anyone require it.

June Bretherton, from JBC Associates, has delivered disability awareness training to a number of organisations from the museums, libraries, and archives sector, as well as working with a number MLA Partnership Regional Agencies. The training has been popular and highly though off, with a number of longer lasting individual organisational relationship evolving out of the initial training.
