Dear all,

'No Command but their Conscience': Secularism and Freethought history event at Bishopsgate Library
To follow on from the success of Londoners Co-operate! in July, we are celebrating our freethought and secularism collections through a special day-long event, 'No command but their conscience' on Saturday 8 December.
This day will explore the history of freethought and secularism in the nineteenth century, including those who led it and how it became an important force in the politics of Victorian Britain. Items from the Charles Bradlaugh and George Jacob Holyoake collections will be on display as part of the day.
The speakers for day are:
* David Nash: "Improving the here and now and Damn the hereafter" - secularist campaigns against religious privilege, imperialism and the war machine
* Deborah Lavin: Rogue Brother, Rogue Comrade: The importance of being Dr Edward Aveling
* Laura Schwartz: Infidel Feminism: Feminism in the 19th Century Freethought Movement
* Anna Davin: Socialist Infidels and Messengers of Light: Street Preaching and Debate in mid 19th Century London
Tickets cost £15 (£10 concessions) and advance booking is necessary. For more information and booking telephone 020 7392 9270 or visit: http://www.bishopsgate.org.uk/secularism.
