Dynamic Rationalisation - A workshop organised by Renaissance North West
9 November 2007, Manchester Art Gallery, 10:00 - 16:45
FREE including lunch and refreshments
Renaissance North West is committed to spreading the benefits of the
Renaissance programme across the region.
This workshop is one of a series which examines key issues facing
museums that are identified in the Museums
Association's Collections for the Future report.
Many museums in the UK are exploring rationalisation as a way of
addressing collection sustainability and cramped
storage facilities. There are also external pressures, from governing
bodies, to dispose of collections, which poses
a threat to our organizations and the sector as a whole. This workshop
will explore the practicalities, legal
implications and ethics of disposal. Contributors will include:
Bolton Museum & Archive Service - Sales averted: a case study
Matthew Constantine will discuss how senior managers at Bolton Museum
negotiated with committee members to
impose policy sanctions that prevent the sale of the collection.
Lancashire County Museums Service - Collections Development Project
John McGoldrick, Curator of Social History, will outline Lancashire
Museum's response to the challenges in Collections
for the Future. He will highlight how the service will make the most
of its collections, the dilemmas encountered by
disposal, including the seemingly simple question 'what is a
collection?'
Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust - A strategic approach to rationalisation
Ian Bancroft and Carole Tyldesley will discuss how their review of
Wigan's collection links to the overall review of
Heritage Services. With 6 months of the work completed, they will
outline the success of the project and summarize
what this now means in terms of rationalisation and disposal.
Manchester Museums and Galleries Consortium - Collections Transfer Pilot
Project
Manchester City Galleries are exploring the transfer of their wallpaper
collection to The Whitworth Art Gallery.
The presentation will explain the background to the proposal, examine
the arguments for the transfer and identify
the political, logistical, financial and resource issues that will need
to be considered.
MLA North West - Who to consult and why
Paul Fraser Webb, Development Officer (Standards) will outline the
policy, ethical and legal considerations
in the disposal of museum objects
Selling the art treasures: When is it ethical to sell works of art?
A panel discussion with specific emphasis on the risk posed to local
authority museums when the Council wants to
sell part of the collection. What can be done in terms of policy and
sanctions to deter councils from resorting to
unethical disposal? How do we communicate the importance of culture
outside the sector?
Members of the panel:
Stephen Whittle (chair), Museums & Galleries Development Manager,
Gallery Oldham
Clare Connor, Chief Executive, MLA North West
Virginia Tandy, Director, Manchester City Galleries and President
Museums Association
Sally Cross, Collections Coordinator, Museums Association
Tony Trehy, Arts & Museums Manager, Bury Art Gallery Museum & Archive
